Having It All OR All In Your Head

Bottom line…you can have it all, but not at the same time. Working mom means you’re always working and you’re always a mom, but how you manage the madness and prioritize is how you achieve having it all.

You can’t give 100 percent and slice and dice it a million ways. Instead you look at your (virtual) pie and make room for the things that fit, the things that matter and the givens.

There are 168 hours in a week. If you work, then a minimum of 40 hours is spent at work (not counting random late night emails, travel, client crisis, special projects, etc.) What you do with the remaining 128 hours is up to you.

There are always things that will suffer or take a back seat from dishes and friendships to social events and sleep. There is only so much room for it all…having it all also means having less of it all.

One thing is certain, parenting is never ending (hardest but most rewarding work you’ll ever do IMO), but the daily “hard time” commitment is getting kids ready in the morning, daycare drop off, pick up, bath time, dinner, play/fun time and bed time. It’s never enough time during the week, so for me weekends are mostly dedicated to my family. I always have room and time to spend with my hubby and son. Never gets old or boring 🙂

Working out keeps me sane, but fitting it in always looks like a jig saw puzzle. I literally squeeze it in when I can. Luckily I have an awesome partner who trades daycare pick up, bathing and dinner duties with me so I can get my sweat on. I return the favor a couple of times a week.

But in order to work on my fitness, I work it in at all times. Monday and Wednesday circuit training immediately after work, Tuesday PT during lunch with one of my fave girlfriends, Saturday morning Body Sculpt at 8:30am, randomly in my garage or even doing squats and planks while catching up on TV😂😂

To “have it all” means to integrate it all, make the puzzle pieces work and embrace the madness.

In my world it translates to maximizing lunch hour by getting a manicure or catching up with girlfriends (HH post work is hard to fit in…something’s gotta give.)

It’s working faster and smarter and moving the To Do list to tomorrow when the day is done.

It’s folding clothes and doing laundry, while watching my new obsession A Handmaid’s Tale on HULU or redefining date night with a yummy meal and glass of wine with the hubby once the rug rat is asleep.

It’s being much more of a scheduler in the love department than a free agent.

It means sometimes reading or writing in bed (current situation), while the rest of the house sleeps or getting up early to get stuff done around the house before the day really starts.

It’s choosing the 6am flight and 3:30am wake up call to spend one less night away from home during a work trip.

It’s less sleep and more love. Less complete control and more letting go.

It’s less about perfect and more about embracing the real and living in the moment.

One day we’ll have a teenager and then a college kid and then a full
fledged adult (scary writing that) and we will be empty nesters with all the time in the world.

But for now I want to cherish every crazy moment from work deadlines to toddler tantrums and embrace life for what it is — chaotic and beautiful all at once.

As everyone will remind you (ad nauseam) when you’re a parent of a young child…it all goes by way too fast.

The days are long, but the years are short. So I’m determined to savor every moment and have it all.

#YouReady Working on my Fitness

So my fitness journey since becoming a new mama (2 years ago) has been touch and go. Balancing my full time job and work travel along with  being a mom and spending time with my hubby and little one sometimes puts fitness on the back burner. While I’ve consistently worked out in some form or fashion, I could certainly up my game.

Enter Youfit Health Clubs. They became a client of our agency late last year and while I usually dive right in and support all my clients as a brand ambassador, this specific client truly resonates with me. Not only was I former member, but now doing “work research” includes getting to work out during lunch, after work, on weekends, etc. I really have zero excuse now to not get in the best shape of my life.

Outside of the ridiculously close proximity to my home and office and the awesome hours and class schedule, Youfit is also super welcoming. While I can navigate my way through a gym, work out, take a class, etc. I don’t consider myself an expert by any stretch of the imagination. So for me, I want a place where I can feel comfortable and not intimidated. Youfit fits the bill. I’ve had issues in past work out lives with feeling like I joined some sort of cult — where if you’re not working out 24/7, eating a certain way and planning to compete professionally, you’re less than. As a working mom, I don’t have time to feel like the gym is an extra to do. I really want my time working out to be positive, fun and produce results, but on my own terms.

Over the last couple of months I’ve been consistently working out at Youfit with a combination of group exercise classes including Zumba and YouGX body sculpt and going in for cardio and my favorite workout, the Express Circuit — a 30-minute full body workout with 10 machines and 10 sets of cardio. I love this because I can go during lunch, get a great sweat session in and mix it up with the cardio portion. I’ll do kettle bell swings, planks, squats, lunges, jumping jacks, etc. Each time, I can customize it for me and how I’m feeling that day. They also have two weekly Express Circuit classes with a YouCoach where you complete the circuit with other members. That’s always fun since you have a certified personal trainer running the class and inspiration/competition with the group aspect.

Now I have decided to take my fitness game to the next level and have signed up for a Fitness Assessment (free at Youfit with your membership) and to start working with a YouCoach Personal Trainer. I’m super excited, but also scared to see what my assessment reveals. I know I could be in better shape and definitely could eat healthier (I’m Cuban and I can’t resist certain yummy, but bad for you food) — so I’m equally excited and terrified for the results.

This will be the first time ever working with a Certified Personal Trainer and I’m excited to go on this journey and hopefully look and feel better.Probably my favorite part of the PT program is having one-on-one attention with a customized program that works for me and my schedule and where I’ll be held accountable. I’ll be able to work with my designated YouCoach during days/time that are convenient and to meet my specific fitness goals.

I don’t really have a specific goal in mind outside of toning and tightening my current body. To be perfectly honest and vain, I’d love to be able to wear a bikini and feel confident in it again. Since having Westley, I’ve enjoyed and rocked one pieces during the summer. While I don’t think they’re going anywhere (because I LOVE them and they’re sexy and comfy), I’d like to have the option of rocking a two piece and feeling confident as in 20-something, pre-baby confident!

I’ll be posting and sharing photos along the way in hopes to inspire other moms to make health and fitness a priority. Trust me, I know how hard it is to carve out time for yourself, but being a more active, healthy and present mom will benefit not only me, but also my family.

Getting Back In Shape…One Step At A Time

Pregnancy does a number on your body, but all it takes is one look at the end result (your bundle of joy) and all is forgiven. So now begins my fitness journey back to what is hopefully a better body. I know it will be a better body than before because it gave birth to my sweet baby boy. If you can go through labor sans epidural (not by choice), you can do anything. 😉

I can’t really complain, I feel like nature has been pretty good to me so far. Granted, I’ll definitely be in a one piece this summer, but overall it could have been much worse. Biggest change is I am wider than I used to be, so some of my clothing is a bit snug. According to my OB, it takes about 9 months for your body to feel back to normal, even if you fit into your clothes right away. Even at 10 weeks out, I am feeling more like myself. No one tells you about “the aftermath of after birth” — the crime scene your baby leaves behind. For the first six weeks you don’t feel like yourself — too many things happening , too many products needed during each bathroom trip that usually takes 10-15 minutes of work. But miraculously, it all starts to feel more normal and not exactly as it used to be (that won’t ever be the case), but a new version of you.

So now begins the journey of getting my fitness on. I’ve gone on a few runs, done a few work outs and I have a lot of work to do. But the important part is I am doing the work and eventually I’ll get there. It is unrealistic to imagine that what celebs showcase — a perfect body 2 months post baby is real. Perhaps that reality exists when you can afford a full time trainer, chef and baby nurse, but in the real world, it may very well take me the next year to get back to me, but I will put in the work and whatever the outcome, one look at Westley and it’s worth all the trouble.
